Walsall
Walsall attracts social workers more effectively
using JGP’s talent management solutions
Case Study - Attracting the hard to hire
Project overview
JGP’s Talent pool was implemented up to address Walsall's shortfall in social care staff, resulting in a reduced cost per hire to just £316. Walsall now enjoys 44 posts filled in 2 years and with a solution that has been integrated into Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council website, local advertising and recruiting fairs.
Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council has been using Internet-based advertising to recruit social workers since 2003, but has upped its game to keep ahead of its rivals. The authority’s Strategic Recruitment Team is attracting the best talent using dynamic, online recruitment channels, designed and delivered by JGP talent management specialists. The West Midlands authority has successfully used JGP’s talent pool solution to fill 44 social worker posts within the last two years. This planned and highly targeted approach now delivers a reduced cost-per-hire of only £316-00 (media cost only).
A fight for talent / the challenge
Like many councils around the country, Walsall has struggled for years to attract candidates to fill its social
care & children’s services vacancies. With fast declining numbers of younger qualified care workers entering
the UK workforce and Internet advertising challenging print media-based job advertising, public sector
employers are even using tactics reminiscent of City of London financiers in the 1980s - incentives and
golden hellos, or scouting overseas for candidates - to fill the gaps. Operational efficiencies are becoming
more important too: the government’s ongoing Efficiency Agenda is demanding more streamlined
departmental operations, leading to changes such as the replacement of paper-based recruitment systems
with electronic ones.
